Friday Tips for Artists: Taking Time

This is a simple post, addressing a subject you’ve all likely dealt with: Volunteerism. Tomorrow I, along with several other adults, am taking a group of high school artists on a painting/sculpting/photographing excursion to the Flint Hills. While these kids are greatly talented, several come from the inner city, and hence do not have access–yet–to the comforts that many of us take for granted.

We’ve rented some fancy-assed bus for them, are feeding them lunch, grouping them with several professional artists of varying disciplines, and seeing to it that they get a day of adventure and instruction that is hardly common. The Kansas City Star is sending a writer and photographer along to cover the gig. After it’s over, and the kids have created the works that were inspired by the trip–Abstract or Traditional–we’ll sponsor a first-rate opening for them in the Crossroads District, otherwise known as Gallery Central.

Several of us worked hard to organize this, and make it sing. I also have an opening to manage at my gallery tomorrow night. So between all this, finishing the screenplay (it goes to NY Monday), taking care of my clients, my family, and dealing with some errant subcontractors, it’s been a helluva week. Hence, I’ve been too busy to write a Friday Tips today. Yeah, I know that ain’t much of an excuse, but it’s the best I’ve got.
